Why did we build Alt?

Built by students from Korea's top engineering school for unlimited class note-taking.

Alt was started when I saw my friend transcribing and summarizing lectures using a speech-to-text model. Most AI note-taking apps have time limits. They run out after taking 3–4 lectures. This started as a small project as I thought it would be easy without knowing what kind of pain was waiting for me. It was hard to achieve high performance while reducing memory usage. I even made an open-source project (stars appreciated!) When I was taking classes, there weren't tools like this, and it was hard to listen while taking notes manually. If a service like this had existed, it would've made my life much easier. We want students around the world to study more easily. It is completely free. That's possible because we don't run any servers or rely on paid APIs. We hope it's useful for you. Is Alt really free?

Yes. Recording, transcription, and AI summaries that run on your device are free, with no time or usage limits. The optional Pro plan adds the latest cloud AI models such as GPT and Gemini, but you never need it to keep using Alt.

How can Alt be free and unlimited?

Because the AI runs on your own computer. Most AI note-takers send your audio to their servers and pay for every minute they process. Alt runs speech recognition and summaries locally, so there are no server costs to pass on to you.

Does Alt work offline?

Yes. On Apple Silicon Macs (M1 or newer) and Windows PCs, recording and transcription run on a local AI engine and work without an internet connection. The Pro plan's cloud AI features and the Intel Mac version, which uses cloud transcription, need internet.

Is my audio sent to a server?

No. With the local AI engine, your audio and transcripts are processed and stored on your device and are never uploaded to Alt's servers. Content leaves your device only when you turn on a cloud feature, such as cloud AI models or sharing a note.

What languages does Alt support?

Alt transcribes speech in more than 100 languages and translates in real time while you record, so you can follow lectures and meetings in a language you are still learning.

Can Alt transcribe Zoom, Google Meet, or YouTube?

Yes. Alt records system audio, so it can transcribe and summarize Google Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Discord calls. You can also paste a YouTube link to turn the video into text and a summary.

Which devices can I use Alt on?

Alt is available for Mac, Windows PC, iPhone, iPad, and Android. On Mac, Apple Silicon (M1 or newer) transcribes on-device, while Intel Macs (macOS 14.4+) use cloud transcription. iPhone requires an iPhone 12 or newer with iOS 18+, and iPad requires an A14 Bionic or M1 chip or newer with iPadOS 18+.
