Second Debate: Opposition Prep

Okay, really good point. Similar to what we had there, we don't necessarily know that they're going to use the time to prepare, but it could actually lead to burnout. Okay, we have right now, if they're there six days, they can spread out their work, spread out their planning time. If it's five days, they have less time to prepare. They may feel more of a burden having to prepare things on their off time. Good. All right. Very, very good ideas. Almost everyone that we called on had a slightly different take on these. There's not one

01:59:13

way to attack the point. Looking at it, thinking logically, trying to figure out what is a flaw in this that I can point out to try and make their ideas seem a little bit weaker. Very, very good work. Now, where that leaves us right now, what I want to show you are two things here. First of all, I'm not saying next week, we're not leaving. Don't get excited. We're staying here for the full period.

01:59:46

First of all, I finished reviewing your videos and grading your first presentations, but I finished so late I didn't have time to get your grade sheets uploaded. I'm going to do that right now once I let you start working. So you will have your grades back before you leave class today. What you need to know about your second debate presentation. Debate presentations start next week on Thursday and the following week on Tuesday. So you have a whole week left to

02:00:17

put together your next presentation. Okay? Everyone look up here at me so I know you're listening. Okay. You are presenting on the exact same topic you had last time. If you are one of the students who kind of misunderstood your topic and went off topic, please don't do that again. Focus in on what your topic is supposed to be. Two big differences this number one, now you are the opposition. You are against the motion. So,

02:00:48

So you need to choose one reason why you disagree with it. Look back at that list when you got together with your content group. We had the best two or three reasons to agree, the best two or three reasons to disagree. Choose one of those reasons. Don't come up with something else random. If you don't remember what those options were, if for some reason you didn't write them down in the future, make sure you do that. But talk to someone else who has your same topic. Figure out what are the options that we talked about. So you have a strong topic.

02:01:27

And you're just presenting the opposition, the opposite point of view. You are against it. Okay, that's change number one. Change number two. Your presentation, you'll start the same. As a member of the opposition, we are against the proposition to blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Okay, so you're telling us you're against it. Before you tell us your first reason, you are going to do a short rebuttal. And you are going to do a rebuttal of your previous presentation.

02:01:59

So whatever point you made in your last presentation, if you said, we need to, we support the nuclear power because we need green energy, okay? Your rebuttal is going to be against that point. My opponent on the government side said that nuclear power is green energy. However, and then go through that five-point rebuttal plan, okay? Whatever you presented last time, even if you were one of the students that was kind of off topic,

02:02:32

You can point out that you were off topic, but also explain to us why it's not a good argument. Even if that were a good argument, even if that were on topic, this would be the problem with it. Okay? So, you'll introduce yourself as opposition, you will rebut your own previous presentation, and then you will provide one point for the opposition side. Alright? Now, what I want to show you are two things that you need to be working on this weekend.

02:03:04

We're down here in week eight. First, like I said, you will have your grade sheets back. You will have your grade sheets back before we leave today. Homework number one is your debate one POI. It says download and complete the attached form. You're going to fill in these, the topic, which resolution you defended, the reason, what is the one reason you presented, point of interest question. You're going to copy and paste from the grade sheet. Okay? And then you're going to write a one paragraph response,

02:03:41

maximum 350 words. Okay, so if you download this, this is what it looks like. Very simple. Put your name and ID, topic. You don't have to write the whole resolution. If it's nuclear power, if it's social media ban, or whatever, just give me a short. And then what is the reason that you presented in your presentation? What was the one reason that you argued? Whether it was harm to children or whatever, give me a short, just title for it. And then you'll see on your grade sheet in the Excel file, I have a question that I wrote out for you. Just copy and paste that right into this box.

02:04:22

And then down here, maximum 350 words to address the question that I asked you about your presentation. This is due on iCampus by Sunday night. Let me make sure that's correct. I didn't know how they changed the calendar on Microsoft. The 27th is Sunday, right? Oh, sorry. Monday night. I gave you until Monday. This is due by 11:00 p.m. on Monday night, the 27th. So you have the weekend to think about this.

02:04:54

Use data, okay? Look at the resources that you have. Don't just give me, like with this, you're just kind of making up thoughts with the rebuttal that we just did. With the point of interest here, I want some actual data to back up what you're saying. So the good thing here, this is worth five points, and these five points get added to your debate grade. So if you did not do very well on the actual debate, this is a chance for you to get a five out of five and boost up that debate presentation score. All right.

02:05:32

So this is due by Monday night. The other thing I have here in week eight, it says debate outline. Create a basic outline for your second debate presentation. Clearly write one main argument that you will make. So basically write a topic sentence like if you were writing a paragraph. And then show me bullet pointed notes of some of the points, evidence, data you're going to present. I want to make sure that we are really, really prepared for these presentations when they start. There's no specific document for this. I don't care if you do it. I don't care how you do it. Make sure you have what is the point you're arguing and just some basic details.

02:06:15

On Tuesday in class, all we're doing, Tuesday is a preparation day for you. I am going to come around and every single one of you gets about two minutes one-on-one with me. So I want to look at your outline for about 30 seconds, get a basic understanding of what you're talking about, and then you'll have a chance to ask me any questions that you want to ask. Okay? So two really important things. Get your point of interest answered by Monday night at 11 p.m. turned in on iCampus. Make sure it's a Microsoft Word document, nothing else. And then have a really basic outline prepared for class on Tuesday.

02:06:54

Okay? All right. We have about 40 minutes left. This is time for you to begin working on this. I don't care if you're working on a rebuttal for your previous presentation. I don't care if you're doing research and organizing things for your presentation. As long as you are preparing for this class, that's all that matters right now. And like I said, your grades and feedback will start popping up on iCampus in a few minutes. Okay? It's in the grade sheet. Yeah. So once that in the Excel file, the bottom, the very bottom box is just some general overall comments. Right above it, you'll see a POI.

02:07:31

Yes? . No, I'm going to get that from you later. Any other questions? Okay. Go ahead. We'll get started and I will get this feedback back to you.
