Day1_Opening: Junction X Korea 2026 Hackathon
Shared on August 21, 2026
We are not safe soon. And this is my first time standing on the floor. How quickly the years are going back. Whether this is your first junction event or you've joined before, I would like to warmly welcome everyone here today. Before we get started, let me tell you a little about Junction: it is one of the world's largest head‑toons, founded in 2015 at Aalto University in Finland by students from the Aalto‑ES community. Since its first few years in Finland, Junction has expanded internationally, hosting events worldwide. The final winning team will earn the opportunity to join the main Junction hackathon in Philadelphia.
We are primarily led by students. We exist to push the boundaries of technology. We believe one of the best ways to do this is through hack points. Because A: you have to compete against other people to win actual money, so you have the proper incentive. B: the energy that you feel around you pushes you to be better and better. And you get excited about building. And this building can lead to new concrete innovations. And in the best scenarios it will lead to new companies that you can fund yourself.
To me, the spring of Junction is about bringing people together who might never otherwise meet and giving them the chance to create something together. And when you say hacker at Junction, we don't simply mean people who are good at writing books. Being a hacker is a mindset. It may have been curious enough to question what seems normal and worthy enough to actually test your ideas. You talk, you disagree, you fail, and you try again. And somewhere in that process, you may discover something you would never have on your own. That is a culture Junction was to create.
Right here in Pohong, Pohong is a city shaped by industry, research, technology, and a constant willingness to take on new challenges. And for the next three days, this is where you will create new possibilities. Right now, many of the ideas that will come out of this hackathon don't exist yet. But three days from now, this place will be filled with your code, your designs, your services, your prototypes, and all the questions, conversations, and experiments that brought them to life, creating something that doesn't exist yet. That to me is exactly why we are here. Our main slogan of this year is "Have Our Own Zoom."
It means that you need to go back to your source, to the problem, the motivation, and the reason we choose to build in the first place. Over the past few years, the way creating things has changed a lot. With the rise of AI, we can now write code, create designs, and turn your ideas into working products faster than ever before.
So this year, we want to ask a simple question. When building has become this much easier, what should matter more in a hackathon? It is simply about building faster? We don't think so. The more powerful our tools become, the more important it is to ask. What do we want to build? And why does it matter? And this year, we want to bring our origins from three ideas. Root, recruit, rotate. First is root. Go back to your risk for building. Ask yourself, "Why does this problem matter to me?" Find your purpose and find your why. The second is recruit. Question the report. A familiar problem doesn't have to be solved in a familiar way. Use new technology. Use your own experience and use own way of thinking to rewrite what already exists. And finally, with taste. Don't be afraid to let your idea change. It can fail. It can take a totally different direction. It can become something you never expected after one conversation with your teammates. That is part of the process. So over these three days, let your iris involved. Loose your purpose, recoup the failure, and protect the possible. And when these three days are over, I have to say, I hope what matters is simply how much code you write. I hope it's how many good questions you discover, how much you challenge one another, and how differently you think when you leave this place compared to when you first walk in. Have our horizon. Go back to where you started and building something new from there.
We at Junction are part of the Finnish startup ecosystem, and we believe that building and innovating with technology will bring the world to a better place. The global aspect of Junction represents this as a community, doing these things together, not just competing against each other. Open innovation through hackathons is at the heart of our mission.
And of course, none of this would be possible without the people who helped make this event happen. I'd like to sincerely thank our main partners who have worked with us and supporting Junction X Korea 2026 along the way. So now, let me introduce the main partners of Junction X Korea 2026. First, the Kyong Sang-buk-to.
Next, let us introduce our track partners. First, Microsoft, Alt-Bage, Labla, and Furiosa. We sincerely appreciate our track partners for their support and for bringing exciting challenges to this year's event.
Furiosa is a domestic semiconductor company that also supports AI workloads. While it is not primarily an AI company, it offers cheap and fast AI execution when we select AI on its platform.
We will start the track out of the 8th of the day.
We would also like to take a moment to recognize the law of Junction X 3 and 26 possible. Scott, text for Post-Pack of Engineering School, wrote by EXPAN for DOHU AI and Red Bull.
At Postec, they have supported Junction X Korea 2026 in every possible way.
And to the organizers, partners, and mentors, thank you for making these three days possible.
This year's Junction X3 is especially meaningful as Postec celebrates its 40th anniversary, as Vice President said. Postec was founded 40 years ago on a simple but ambitious idea to take the path less traveled and to go where others have not yet gone. That pioneering spirit still defines us today. And that spirit is very much at the heart of a hackathon like this one. So over the next three years, we will meet people you have never worked with, cast ideas that may not work, and probably change your plans all the way.
I'm very pleased to introduce our special guest today. First, please welcome Geunhee Young, Bias Governor for Economic Affairs of Gyeongsangbukdo.
So once again, welcome to Postec, welcome to JungSoonX. Korea and good luck. And a great three days and enjoy the journey. Thank you very much.
Thank you, Vice Governor Yang.
Let's please welcome Song Geun Kim, President of POST-TEP.

[14:19] I hope I could be there trying to find solutions to real-life problems. [14:25] But my job is to bring greetings from the happiest country of the world - and from the origin of Chansun, from Finland. [14:31] Of course, from there we can lead that because Finland is the happiest country - and Chansun originates from Finland, it means hackers are happy, - which means you are happy. [14:45] And I hope you will be very happy during this weekend.

[14:48] I have three messages I wanted to raise tonight, [14:56] which will connect to happiness with the junction and have a good one. [15:01] First is trust. [15:03] I think at least the little older ones that you saw Economist magazine asking a couple of weeks ago, [15:11] should we be scared of Elon Musk? [15:16] I think it's a good point to showcase how important trust and what people working with technology do with technology. [15:26] Technology is not good or bad. [15:29] Technology and the solutions we create depend on the people and how people use and create those. [15:37] So building trust is important and trust is one of the main reasons that anyone has night time in a row of the World Happiness ranking. [15:47] My second message is freedom. [15:51] We all agree we live in a very bizarre world. [15:56] A lot of surprises happening daily, especially in my job. [16:01] So that points out also to the individual's power, to the power that you have in shaping things. [16:09] You have great freedom here to create something new, something durable, to solve problems, what we cannot imagine. [16:18] And finally, my third message is sleep. [16:23] But before getting there, you know the main point is that it's a great opportunity to meet people. [16:28] Like Kiera said, there is certain chief impacting them. [16:32] This is an opportunity for you to create something, to learn something, to have fun and make friends. [16:41] And I know that you are not going to sleep much during this weekend, but I hope you sleep more next week. [16:47] Because sleep is one of the main origins of happiness and Finnish people of course sleep the most in the world. [16:54] So please enjoy this weekend, find great solutions, make great friends and good luck to you. [17:01] Thank you.
You've been provided with all the necessary resources in the space, you have amazing challenges. Now you just have to build. So please make sure your time is well spent this weekend and try to push the boundaries for technology. Thank you.
Thank you, Emil. An event like this would not be complete without a group photo.
